WHAT THIS SCREEN ANSWERS
Rack and pinion motion turns a shaft torque question into a linear-force question. The pitch radius is the lever arm connecting the two. A smaller pinion radius produces more tangential force from the same torque, but it also changes speed, tooth engagement, packaging, and tooth loading. This screen keeps the basic force relationship visible before a rack concept is selected from a catalog image.
Enter torque at the pinion, the actual pitch radius, an efficiency assumption, and the required linear load. MechPlane converts the torque to tangential force and compares the result with the entered load. The comparison is useful only when load and torque are referenced to the same operating condition. Acceleration, incline, friction, and external forces should be resolved before being entered.
Force capacity alone does not establish a credible rack drive. Tooth geometry, module or diametral pitch, face width, material, heat treatment, lubrication, mounting stiffness, backlash, alignment, speed, and shock all influence final performance. A long rack also raises installation and support questions that a single radius calculation cannot see.
Use the result to frame a candidate drive envelope, then check the exact rack and pinion pair against current supplier data. Confirm tooth load, allowable torque, lubrication, bearing loads, backlash, mounting, and real motion duty. The result is not a gear rating or a released actuator design.
