WHAT THIS SCREEN ANSWERS

Thread engagement transfers axial load through a distributed helical contact area, but the first engaged threads may carry more load than an ideal uniform model suggests. This screen makes engagement length and material limit visible as early design variables. It is useful for comparing a tapped hole, nut, insert, or altered engagement length before a connection is treated as a generic bolt problem.

Enter axial load, nominal thread diameter, engagement length, and separate internal and external thread shear limits. MechPlane uses a cylindrical shear-area proxy to show nominal stress and utilization for each side. Engagement must be positive because zero engagement is not a physical connection. The limits stay user-entered because thread materials and real geometry differ.

Thread stripping is not the only failure mode. The bolt can fail in tension, the female material can bear or crack, the joint can separate, or the connection can fatigue, loosen, gall, or corrode. Actual thread pitch, class, engagement quality, incomplete threads, insert geometry, installation, load direction, and material condition all matter.

Use this result to identify whether engagement is a likely constraint, then use the relevant thread method or supplier guidance for the actual geometry. Confirm bolt tension, material, pitch, thread class, engagement, inserts, manufacturing quality, fatigue, and applicable standards before release.
